Die Insel LEFKAS auch LEFKADA genannt unterhalb von KORFU gehört zu den Ionischen Inseln. Die Ionischen Inseln nennen die Griechen auch Eptanissa, 'die sieben Inseln'.  Damit werden die Hauptinseln Korfu, Paxi, Lefkas, Ithaki, Kefalonia, Zakynthos und Kythira zusammengefasst.

The island LEFKAS also called LEFKADA below KORFU belongs to the Ionian Islands. The Ionians also call the Greeks Eptanissa, 'the seven islands'. This summarizes the main islands of Corfu, Paxi, Lefkas, Ithaki, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Kythira.

Die Ionischen Inseln unterscheiden sich von den andren griechischen Inseln durch ein üppige Vegetation und eine italienisch und französisch geprägte Architektur. Der grüne Inselarchipel westlich des griechischen Festlandes und des Peloponnes ist ideales Segelrevier und ein Paradies für Wanderer. Jede Insel hat ein unverwechselbares Gesicht.

Lefkada ist die viertgrößte Insel der Ionischen Inselgruppe und liegt zwischen Korfu und Kefalonia. Nur ein schmaler Streifen Meer trennt die Insel von der Festlandregion Akarnania, eine 50 Meter lange Drehbrücke verbindet die Insel mit dem Festland. Ihren Namen verdankt sie ihrem südlichsten Kap, dem Kap Lefkatas, das im Altertum weißer Felsen bzw. weiße Klippe genannt wurde (lefkos, leukos: griechisch weiß).

Lefkada is the fourth largest island of the Ionian archipelago and lies between Corfu and Kefalonia. Only a narrow strip of sea separates the island from the mainland Akarnania, a 50-meter-long swing bridge connects the island with the mainland. It owes its name to its southernmost cape, the Cape Lefkatas, which in ancient times was called white rock or white cliff (lefkos, leukos: Greek white).

Die Inselhauptstadt Lefkada im Norden wurde auf einer Halbinsel errichtet und ist umgeben vom Kanal und der Lagune. Hier befindet sich auch die Brücke zum Festland. Besonders reizvoll ist das Zentrum der Stadt mit seinen traditionellen Häusern mit bunten Fassaden, den engen, gepflasterten Gässchen und dem zentralen Dorfplatz. Im Geschäftsviertel mit seinen vielen Läden und Cafes herrscht reges Treiben. Für interessierte lohnt sich unbedingt ein Besuch im Archäologischen Museum oder im Volkskundemuseum. Die Stadtbibliothek beherbergt die außergewöhnliche Sammlung der Pinakothek für Nachbyzantinische Kunst. In der näheren Umgebung der Stadt liegen die großen Sandstrände von Gira, Kastro, Myli und Agios Giannis. Der Yachthafen ist der modernste Griechenlands und verfügt über eine Kapazität von 500 Yachten.

The island capital Lefkada in the north was built on a peninsula and is surrounded by the canal and the lagoon. Here is also the bridge to the mainland. Particularly charming is the center of the city with its traditional houses with colorful facades, the narrow, cobbled streets and the central village square. In the business district with its many shops and cafes there is a lot of activity. For those interested, a visit to the Archeological Museum or the Folklore Museum is definitely worthwhile. The Municipal Library houses the extraordinary collection of the Pinakothek for post-Byzantine art. In the immediate vicinity of the city are the large sandy beaches of Gira, Kastro, Myli and Agios Giannis. The marina is the most modern in Greece and has a capacity of 500 yachts.

Der Osten der Insel ist sanft und ruhig. Hier gibt es unzählige Strände in windgeschützten Buchten. Die Westküste zeichnet sich vorwiegend durch imposante Klippen und senkrecht verlaufende Felswände aus. Fichten, Zypressen und Olivenbäume erstrecken sich bis fast ans Meer, einige letzte Rebberge erinnern an den Weinbau, einst Hauptbeschäftigung der Landwirte dieser Region. Es gibt so viele Zypressen auf der Insel, dass man sagen könnte hier ist die Toscana Griechenlands. An der Westküste sollen sich einige der schönsten Strände Europas befinden, so z.B. die Strände von Kastro, Agios Giannis, Pefkoulia, Mylos, Kathisma, Gyalos, Egremni und Porto Katsiki. Es sind teils Sandstrände umspült vom smaragdgrün schimmernden Meer, teils Strände von Felsen umgeben. Die Westküste endet am Kap Lefkatas, wo sich die Lyrikerin Sappho aus enttäuschter Liebe ins Meer gestürzt haben soll.

The east of the island is gentle and quiet. There are countless beaches in wind-sheltered bays. The west coast is characterized mainly by imposing cliffs and vertical cliffs. Spruce trees, cypresses and olive trees extend almost to the sea, some last vineyards are reminiscent of viticulture, once the main occupation of the farmers of this region. There are so many cypresses on the island that you could say here is the Tuscany of Greece. On the west coast are some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, such as the beaches of Kastro, Agios Giannis, Pefkoulia, Mylos, Kathisma, Gyalos, Egremni and Porto Katsiki. It is partly sandy beaches lapped by the emerald green shimmering sea, partly surrounded by rock beaches. The west coast ends at Cape Lefkatas, where the poet Sappho is said to have plunged from disappointed love into the sea.

Das hügelige Hinterland von Lefkas ist von Fichtenwäldern bedeckt, in den Ebenen dominieren Olivenbäume und Zitrusfrüchte. Die Berge sind bedeutende Biotope in denen eine Vielzahl von Pflanzen-, Vogel- und Säugetierarten leben. Zu den Erzeugnissen der leukadischen Erde gehören Öl aus uralten Olivenhainen. Fischroggen mit Wachsüberzug aus den Laichplätzen der Lagune, sowie Rot- und Weißweine. Besonders der aus der seltenen Rebsorte „Vertzami“ gekelterte Wein gilt als einer der Besten in Griechenland.

Lefkada hat eine große kulturelle Tradition. Nach Korfu beherbergt sie die älteste Philharmonie Griechenlands (Gründungsjahr 1850). Es gibt viele traditionelle Volkstanzgruppen, Chöre und Mandolinenorchester. Seit Jahrzehnten finden auch internationale Literatur- und Kunstfestivals statt.  

The hilly hinterland of Lefkas is covered with spruce forests, olive trees and citrus trees dominate the plains. The mountains are important biotopes inhabiting a variety of plant, bird and mammal species. The products of the Lycian earth include oil from ancient olive groves. Fish rye with wax coating from the spawning grounds of the lagoon, as well as red and white wines. Especially the wine made from the rare grape variety "Vertzami" is considered one of the best in Greece.
Lefkada has a great cultural tradition. After Corfu, it houses the oldest philharmonic orchestra in Greece (founded in 1850). There are many traditional folk dance groups, choirs and mandolin orchestras. For decades, international literature and art festivals have also taken place.

Die Insel ist so schön und hat so viel zu bieten, dass sich die Anreise auch über Thessaloniki (4 Stunden Anfahrt / 80% Autobahn) oder Athen (4,5 Stunden Anfahrt / 80% Autobahn) lohnt, was dann täglich das ganze Jahr möglich ist, da hier viele Fluggesellschaften diese Städte anfliegen.  Der Flughafen Preveza bei Lefkas wird von April bis Oktober aus Deutschland immer am Samstag von Condor angeflogen. Alternativ von April bis Oktober immer am Freitag mit tuifly nach Patras (Araxos) ca. 2,5 Stunden von Lefkada entfernt oder mit Condor oder eine andere Luftlinie nach Korfu und dann mit dem Taxi zum Hafen. Mit der Fähre nach Igoumenitsa und von hier ein Auto mieten (am besten schon von Zuhause buchen) und die 85 km nach Lefkada fahren.

The island is so beautiful and has so much to offer that the trip is also worth Thessaloniki (4 hours drive / 80% highway) or Athens (4.5 hours drive / 80% highway), which is possible every day of the year is because many airlines fly to these cities. The airport Preveza near Lefkada is served from April to October from Germany always on Saturday from Condor.
